CHINA’S TELECOMMUNICATION INDUSTRY IN 2004

In 2004, China’s telecommunication industry has gone through ten year’s of reform and development, and China has become the world’s largest telecommunication market with the largest network, the most number of users and the fastest development. Meanwhile, with globalisation and further opening up of market as a result of China’s accession into the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the Chinese government has also shifted the developmental focus in the industry from expanding its scale to enhancing its competitiveness and sustainability. As a result, in 2004, the most highlighted issues in the development and reform of China’s telecommunication industry are: planning and adjustment of competitive landscape among telecommunication operators; legislation of telecommunication laws and legalisation of government regulation; how major telecommunication operators should raise capital from the market to invest in the appropriate next generation wireless telecommunication technology , and imminent competitions from foreign telecommunication operators.
