H.B. International began in 1982 as a manufacturer of home telephone equipment (HBE) in Hong Kong. By the late 1990s, the company had grown from a 10-person factory to an organisation of 10,000. A decade of continuous growth and expansion culminated in the 1994 public listing on the Hong Kong Exchange. Then in 1997, hit by the Asian financial crisis, H.B. International was on the verge of bankruptcy. In 1999 under new management, the company restructured its debt, was renamed, SunCorp Technologies Ltd., and quickly implemented various measures to restore the business. Within three years, the company became a profitable entity. Initially, where did H.B. International go wrong? How did the new team successfully turnaround the business? The case examines H. B.
