The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (SEHK) had been operational for nearly two decades and it faced numerous challenges in its evolutionary process. It overcame those challenges by instituting reforms to its constitution, management and operation. By the late 1990s, a review of the local bourse revealed that there were still some inherent weaknesses in the system. The 1997 Asian economic crisis had further highlighted several regulatory deficiencies. The case objective is to outline the importance of good corporate governance and to examine the role of SEHK in setting and enforcing standards in Hong Kong. Students will gain an appreciation of how the local regulatory framework has evolved, the current problems it faces and an understanding of the issues involved in anticipating future reforms.
